Course Overview

This autism level 3 course has been created to provide an autism qualification, ideal for those who wish to develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of autism. Developed to support a progression into employment in the health and social care or education sector.

Today, over 700,000 people in the UK are autistic, meaning that 2.8m people have a relative on the autism spectrum. The condition affects people of all ages and while it is incurable, the right support at the right time can make an enormous difference to people's lives. Whether you are looking to progress your career; have an autistic family member, friend or colleague; or would just like to increase yours or your staffs’ knowledge and help raise awareness, this qualification is perfect.

This course is only funded in Scotland and is comparable to a Level 6 based on the Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework. Upon completion of the course, learners in Scotland will receive the college’s e-certificate.

Unit 1: Understand the Diagnosis and Management of Autism

  • Section 3: Understand the role of interventions in the management of autism spectrum conditions

This unit focuses on developing knowledge of autism spectrum conditions, including the characteristics, traits and behaviours commonly displayed by individuals. Learners will explore the role of formal diagnosis, including its advantages and potential disadvantages, and factors that may influence the diagnostic process. The unit also covers historical research and categories used in diagnosis, as well as the challenges of identifying autism alongside co-occurring conditions. Finally, learners will examine a range of interventions and therapies used to support individuals and how these can be used to manage autism and associated conditions.

Unit 2: Understand Best Practice in the Context of Autism Spectrum Conditions

  • Section 3: Understand how communication and social interaction can be encouraged for individuals on the autism spectrum

In this unit, learners will develop an understanding of best practice when supporting individuals on the autism spectrum. This includes safeguarding responsibilities, recognising potential risks, and understanding restrictive practices and their impact. Learners will explore person-centred and proactive approaches to support, including the importance of partnership working and advocacy. The unit also focuses on communication and social interaction, including adapting communication styles and using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) methods to support individuals effectively.

Unit 3: Legislation, Guidance, Information and Support Relevant to Autism Spectrum Conditions

This unit provides learners with knowledge of key legislation, guidance and support frameworks relating to autism. Learners will explore the range of services available at local and national level, including statutory, voluntary and independent provision. The unit also examines barriers that individuals and families may face when accessing support and considers ways to overcome these barriers. Additionally, learners will understand the importance of feedback in improving services and ensuring effective support for individuals on the autism spectrum.

Unit 4: Autism Spectrum Conditions and Behaviour

This unit focuses on understanding behaviour in individuals on the autism spectrum. Learners will explore how behaviour is influenced by a range of factors, including triggers and patterns, and the importance of viewing behaviour within the context of autism. The unit covers the impact of behaviour on individuals and others, as well as strategies for proactive and reactive support. Learners will examine behavioural support planning, intervention strategies, and techniques for de-escalating distressed behaviour while maintaining respect and promoting positive outcomes.

Unit 5: Living with Autism Spectrum Conditions in Society

  • Section 1: Understand the role of the media in shaping perceptions of autism spectrum conditions
  • Section 2: Understand the role of resilience when coping with change
  • Section 3: Understand barriers experienced by individuals on the autism spectrum

In this unit, learners will explore how autism is represented in society and the role of the media in shaping public perceptions. They will examine both positive and negative representations and their impact on individuals. The unit also covers emotional resilience and how individuals on the autism spectrum experience and cope with change and significant life events. Learners will consider barriers faced in everyday life, including communication, social interaction and employment, and explore strategies to support inclusion, reduce stress and promote independence.
